Over the past few months, IPE Journal has been keeping a close eye on the political turmoil in South Africa. ANC infighting has risked further destabilizing an economy on the wrong side of the global financial crisis. More importantly, South African society is deteriorating from the bottom up, marked by entrenched poverty and inequality, anti-immigrant violence, and a brain drain that undermines the country's progression up the value-added ladder.
